When it comes to store makeovers, West Elm likes to think big. Rather than simply renovating and redecorating its Downtown Santa Monica location, the Brooklyn-based home furnishings retailer decided to relocate next door, add a couple of floors, and create the ultimate interior design inspiration haven and hangout.

The stylish, fair-trade brand took over the long-vacant neighboring space previously occupied by Michael's, then added a sun-drenched mezzanine and a rooftop area (which is not the worst place to enjoy West Elm's free Wi-Fi) for a total of just over 25,000 square feet. On top of offering the retailer's full array of furniture, lighting, rugs, bedding, tableware, decor, and more, the store also houses online floral delivery service The Bouq's first brick-and-mortar flower bar (where grab-and-go and DIY bouquets range from $25 to $30) and an area where shoppers can try online brand Leesa's comfy and affordable mattresses.

Also in store is an expanded showcasing of West Elm's new nursery collection with Pottery Barn Kids along with a selection of decor, stationery, art, and more from a range of California-based independent designers — all scouted and handpicked by the store's general manager — as part of its LOCAL program. Currently on the shelves are Bossladies magazines, geometric planters by Long Beach-based furniture and decor designer Eric Trine, coastal-themed prints by surfer and artist Andy Davis, dog accessories by Big Adventure, journals and notebooks by Cardtorial, and colorful housewares by Post Studio, to name just a few.

New to the retailer is its first-ever Residency Program, which will feature a different local maker or business each month in its pop-in spaces. Kicking things off is In My Solitude LA, a handmade eco-friendly candle brand founded by cancer survivor Evolyn Brooks; and a showcase of custom-made reclaimed wood marquees by Scott Coppersmith Designs. For those looking to get crafty, In My Solitude is also hosting a

Like all of West Elm's outposts, the SaMo store offers free interior design consultations and planning services with its Design Crew, which can handle everything from transforming your entire living room and hanging your curtains to giving you a hand with your wedding registry and more. For interior decor enthusiasts who need yet another excuse to hang out at the shop, the retailer will also host a schedule of free workshops, hands-on classes, pop-ups, and much more.
