Malibu can thank Fred Segal (the man) for helping to create its stylish shopping scene — and next year, the seaside city can once again enjoy Fred Segal (the brand) when the California-luxe retailer makes its coastal comeback. After relocating its LA flagship from Melrose to Sunset last year, the legendary name is returning to the 'Bu by way of a massive new store at Malibu Village that's slated to open January 2019.
The retailer is moving into recently-closed Malibu Cinemas' 4,000-square-foot space located across from Malibu Country Mart, the development that Segal transformed in the mid-1970s from a '20s-built apartment complex into a thriving commercial district, as LA Times notes.
The cool department store will feature womenswear, jewelry, accessories, and gifts curated by Maris Collective (which also holds space at Fred Segal Sunset) alongside menswear, an exclusive sneaker shop, and beauty department. The brand's own Fred Segal Originals line, a collection of luxe denim, tees, outerwear, and more Cali-cool wardrobe essentials for women and men, will also be on the racks.
Known for opening LA's first-ever denim bar in 1961, the brand was purchased in 2012 by Sandow Media. Now owned by Sandow and Evolution Media Capital, Fred Segal has since expanded to LAX and Tokyo; it's worth noting that the retailer's Melrose location still bears its name but is no longer part of the celebrity-faved chain.
