Legendary L.A. Retailer Fred Segal's New Malibu Village Shop Isn't Your Typical Beachside Boutique
Fred Segal is back in the 'bu. The iconic Los Angeles retailer soft-opened at Malibu Village last week—right across the way from its O.G. location that first opened in the mid-1970s—and the California-cool store is officially welcoming shoppers with a grand opening party all weekend.
As mentioned, the department-style boutique is hosting a full schedule of family-friendly festivities this Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m., including free treats, coffee, and margaritas, mini makeovers by Sephora, a '70s Volkswagen van-turned-photo booth, aura readings, trunk shows with the Little Market and Bondeye Jewelry, and much more. (Get all of the deets over at @fredsegalmalibu's IG Stories.)
Fred Segal (the man) is credited with establishing Malibu's buzzing commercial district and stylish shopping scene: As the L.A. Timesreports, Segal developed the Malibu Country Mart, which débuted in 1975 and also housed his eponymous boutique that remained for about a decade. (The Segal family is no longer part of the company, which was sold to media and licensing company Sandow in 2012 and again to Global Icons last month.)
The new 4,000-square-foot store is located at the prime corner spot previously occupied by Malibu Cinemas and houses three shop-in-shops, womenswear curated by Maris Collective (which also runs Fred Segal Sunset's women's shop), a menswear section stocked with casual-luxe essentials, and kids clothing and accessories—all of which stay true to the retailer's signature SoCal-luxe aesthetic. What you won't find is a dedicated beach shop: Fred Segal CEO Allison Samek explains that while there will be swimwear offerings and upcoming trunk shows with swim brands, the store will be primarily focused curating merchandise with a Malibu-meets-Fred Segal vibe.
In the women's department, expect to find ready-to-wear, bags, footwear, and accessories from a mix of luxury labels and cult-favorite designers, like dresses and bags from Proenza Schouler, silk floral maxi dresses by Borgo De Nor, minimalist-cool essentials from Shaina Mote and Rodebjer, cool-girl clothing by Staud, playful blouses and skirts by Sea New York and Whit, sweats and tees from Aviator Nation, and many many others.
And true to the pioneering boutique's roots (O.G. founder Fred Segal opened his eponymous shop in 1961 and introduced the idea of the denim bar), the shop also stocks jeans from 3×1, Grlfnd, Mother, Re/Done, and others as well as the Fred Segals Originals line of essentials. Athleisure enthusiasts and fitness fiends will also find a selection of stylish sweat gear from Alo, Year of Ours, Spiritual Gangster, Ultracor and Athletic Propulsion Labs, to name a few.
There's also an entire wall dedicated to footwear and bags, all curated by L.A. luxury accessories boutique Madison (not to be confused with the womenswear boutique of the same name, which was actually born from the same co-founders and split into two different stores). There, find European and Stateside designers like Chloe Gosselin, Calleen Cordero, Casadei, Lorena Paggi, Rocco P, and more, as well as bags from Perrin Paris, Campomaggi, and Volker Lang.
Also on shelves are direct-to-consumer online brand Senreve's popular Maestra bags in an array of sizes, clutches, and other celeb-beloved carryalls alongside steppers from Australia-based By Far, heels and sandals from L.A.'s own Loq and Beatrice Valenzuela, and eco-friendly sneakers from Meghan Markle-faved French brand Veja. A wellness-focused beauty shop rounds out the offerings: Expect to find Fred Segal's exclusive capsule with haircare brand R+Co and Moon Juice's adaptogen-powered Brain Dusts, Sex Dusts, and more.
Over in the men's area, find t-shirts and other basics by John Elliott, Billy, Sol Angeles, Rhône, and Håndværk; Japanese streetwear-inspired pieces by French-born, Tokyo-based designer Julien David; chinos by S.K.U. ("Save Khaki United"); and reworked vintage denim by L.A.'s own Atelier + Repairs; among others.
Miami-based C Bonz (which also had a shop-in-shop at Fred Segal's now-shuttered Santa Monica store) also has its own space featuring customizable jackets and accessories that can be embroidered while you wait.
