It seems that Tom Ford has a new tradition merging awards season and fashion week. The fashion designer and filmmaker is once again forgoing New York Fashion Week for his fall/winter 2020 collection in favor of showing in L.A., and during the very same week as the 91st Academy Awards, reports Women's Wear Daily.
Ford, who's also the chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, will show his next collection on Friday, Feb. 7, two days before the Oscars, according to WWD. "The decision to show in February in Los Angeles feels very natural to me. It is my home, and has a strong impact on the way that I live and work within both the fashion and film worlds," Ford told the fashion industry trade pub.
He continued: "There is an excitement in L.A. on that particular weekend and the relationship between film and fashion is a strong one. In my role as chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), my main intent and priority is to globalize and bring attention to American fashion. There is truly no bigger or more prominent stage in the world at any given time than Los Angeles during the Academy Awards."
Ford also showed his fall/winter 2015 collection in L.A., but bowed out of rumored plans to stage a show here in 2017.
L.A. designer Jonathan Simkhai (who relocated from New York last year), told WWD that while he's still showing at NYFW in February, he's also "planning something very special ourselves to take place in L.A. in the coming year."
