Fact: It's been scientifically proven that dressing our abodes in certain colors can boost our mood. If your space is in need of a stylish shade swap for the new decade, then Block Shop's first L.A. boutique is here to give every corner of her fashionable home a print-happy makeover. (The brand recently repainted Platform's cool park, too.)
The 200-square-foot store opened at the end of November within the brand's studio, which is tucked away in a quiet residential corner of Atwater Village. There, shop L.A.-based artist sisters Hopie and Lily Stockman's jewel-toned collection of home textiles, clothing, accessories, and prints, which are made using the traditional art of Indian hand block printing by artisans in Jaipur.
In addition to the brand's best-selling scarves, pillow covers, and art ($70 to $320) in its signature Bauhaus-inspired designs, expect to find everything from hand-woven robes and rugs ($175 to $500 and up) to napkins and table runners ($14 to $70) in an array of eye-popping geometric patterns. Block Shop's space will also host hands-on workshops led by Hopie and Lily themselves; students will be in good hands, as both studied painting at Brown University and Harvard, respectively, among other Ivy League creative creds.
The Stockman sisters teamed with local talents and friends to decorate their shop, which features custom furnishings by Waka Waka, a midcentury-inspired chandelier by Brendan Ravenhill, Entler table lamps, and a mirror by Kalon Studios, while the walls are painted with Farrow & Ball's Cooking Apple Green.
Block Shop was born in 2013 when its founders began making chic scarves as a way to support small-scale production and healthy working conditions for family-owned printing businesses in India. The socially-responsible label branched out to home textiles, and it also invests five percent of annual profits into its community health and empowerment initiatives in Jaipur.
