From outfitting girl gangs to battling fast fashion copycat Zara in the courts, LA illustrator Tuesday Bassen clearly wields much more power beyond her pencil. After running Chinatown shop Friend Mart for the past two years with chainstitching pal Ben Goetting, the award-winning artist is setting up her own shop in Echo Park tonight. Bonus: She's throwing a grand opening bash this evening — and everyone's invited.
Landing on Sunset Boulevard's 1200 block (where Eightfold Coffee and stylish shops Bel Kazan and Ali Golden are among neighbors), Bassen's boutique will stock her own clothing collection — including her latest Camp collection and her bestselling Mixed Emotions Club jackets, Aggressive sweaters, and other vintage-inspired merch — in sizes XS to 5X plus her people-pleasing enamel pins, patches, art prints, paper goods, and more. Per the artist's Instagram, the space will offer "a few sold out things" as well.
As far as Friend Mart's future, Goetting is reopening the space June 9 as World Famous Original, where you can expect to find the artist's patches, pins, stationery, buttons, and more flair accessories alongside items from like-minded friends.
Oh, and about tonight's soirée: It's happening at the shop from 7 to 10pm. Expect tarot card readings by Diva Zappa, food by L. Freeman, and beer and drinks by Pabst Blue Ribbon and Tito's Vodka; see below for a peek at the new storefront and keep scrolling for the store's full address.
