You're a true Angeleno: You know exactly how to survive the terrifying Fairfax Asterisk (congrats), you swear that your fave post-Short Stop taco truck is seriously LA's best, and you can navigate your out-of-town friends to every Clueless film location (without the help of Waze). If you also consider supporting local talents as part of your citizenly responsibilities, then LA Original's latest installment at the Museum of Contemporary Art's Grand Avenue space will be your happy place.
Now through Labor Day (Monday, September 3), the pop-up shop — part of a program under the nonprofit org Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles to help boost the city's local manufacturers and creatives — is holding court at the modern art museum's retail space with merch made by a handful of cool hometown heroes. Expect to find carryalls by Clare V., basics by EVERYBODY.WORLD, streetwear by Carrots by Anwar Carrots, dainty fine jewelry by Maya Brenner, printastic accessories by Pocket Square Clothing, canvas market bags by Apolis, totes by 72 and Sunny (which also designed LA Original's logo) to name just a few.
There are also hand-painted pots by trippy artist Jenn Stark, throw pillows by Cisco Home, stationery by Cha Cha Covers, wood trays by Wolfum, home fragrances by P.F. Candle Co., vases by Concrete Geometric, and much more. That's not all: The shoppable initiative also supports Downtown Women's Center's Made by DWC program, which teaches career and maker skills to women who are transitioning out of homelessness.
LA Original at the MOCA Store is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:30am to 6:30pm; Thursday from 10:30am to 8:30pm; and Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:30am to 5:30pm.
