Minimalist-Cool Indie Boutique Creatures of Comfort Is Closing

The sad news also comes with a major sale.

Devotees of minimalist, envelope-pushing fashion have flocked to Creatures of Comfort for its selection of rising independent labels, but come December, cool-girl shoppers will have to restock their adventurous wardrobes elsewhere. The bicoastal Los Angeles-born retailer announced today its stores are shuttering forever next month — but there's still some comfort (sorry) to be had with the sad news.

"After 14 exciting years in business, Creatures of Comfort will be closing its doors on December 17th of this year," the boutique explained on Instagram. "Creating our own Collection [sic] and sharing our Home [sic] with so many talented artists and designers over the years, has been an inspiring experience for all of us."

Founder Jade Lai opened the first CoC shop in 2005 in West Hollywood and relocated the shop to Silver Lake last year; a New York outpost arrived on Mulberry Street in the fall of 2010, when Lai also debuted her first in-house collection. (After visiting the just-opened NY shop, the New York Times' Cintra Wilson declared its inventive inventory "post-human.") Lai was an early supporter of then-emerging designers like Isabel Marant and Rachel Comey, to name a few, and her cool eye for artful and modern silhouettes garnered starry fans like Kim Gordon, Rashida Jones, Michelle Williams, and Kirsten Dunst, notes New York Times and Need Supply.

There's a silver lining to the bummer announcement: Everything will be 50% off at the boutique's LA and NYC storefronts until Monday, December 17, when the doors are permanently closed. Can't make it IRL? There's plenty of retail therapy to be had at CoC online until the plug is pulled Monday, December 10.

We'll miss you, Creatures of Comfort — but can't wait to see what Lai has up her stylish sleeves next.
