Looking to build your portfolio and industry network? We've got good news: Uncover LA is looking for freelance contributors. In addition to getting paid for your work, you'll get hands-on experience covering Los Angeles' thriving and stylish scene, and will be working directly with our editor and founder.
Our ideal candidate doesn't need to be a seasoned pro — we're looking for anyone who's got the right writing chops and a strong interest in L.A. reporting, retail, fashion, and culture.
Freelance Writer Duties and Responsibilities
- Write assigned and pitched news stories and features
- Researching, fact-checking, editing, and revising stories
- Building content (copy and images) in WordPress
- Adhering to AP style and online media best practices
- Pulling images and light editing on Photoshop (or other photo editing software) if needed
- Stay up-to-date on relevant industries, local retail and news, and trends
- Work remotely on your own laptop/computer
Freelance Writer Requirements and Qualifications
- Located in the Los Angeles area
- Passion for and extensive knowledge of the nuances of L.A. life, as well as the local creative/cultural and/or fashion scenes
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Possess (or working towards) a college degree in journalism, English, or another writing-related field
Freelance Writer Preferred (But Not Required) Skills
- Portfolio of past work writing about similar topics for online or print publications
- Familiarity with AP style
- Familiarity with HTML
- Light photo editing skills
- Experience using WordPress or another CMS
- Passion for sniffing out local retail and lifestyle news
- Ability to quickly write and report accurate news stories on fashion, retail, and more topics
- Knowledge of SEO, analytics, and Google Trends to inform stories
