After the pandemic forced dental practices to close, dental hygienists are scraping more than two years' worth of tartar off patients' teeth. That's nothing to brush aside, though, given bad oral bacteria begin to outnumber good oral bacteria at the three-month mark after your last cleaning. Yet many aren't rushing to see their dentist as they reemerge from their homes. Either because of COVID-related health concerns, the cost of services, or the (very valid) fear of getting painfully poked (36% of people in the U.S. have a fear of dental treatment).
Now, your visit to the dentist can feel nearly as rejuvenating as a fancy salon day thanks to Pearline Health, a women-founded company that's removing barriers to regular dental cleanings with transparent pricing and modern, hassle-free visits at its new West Hollywood flagship.
"50% of the population does not get their teeth cleaned. This is due to their fear of unexpected and high costs, fear of pain, lack of time, and frustrations with the inefficiencies of the entire experience. This is not only a problem for their dental health but for their overall health. We're on a mission to change this and make the experience seamless and even fun," said Dr. Jamie Sands, Pearline Health co-founder and chief medical officer.
Dr. Sands—one of L.A.'s most sought-after dentists— and her best friend from 10th-grade biology class, Carolyn Yashari Becher—an Iranian-American entrepreneur and co-founder of HopSkipDrive—both saw a gap to be filled and joined forces to make dental cleanings more efficient and accessible for communities. Without any drills, scrubs, or bulky equipment, Pearline Health locations intentionally don't look, sound, feel, or smell like dentist offices.
Not your typical sterile, scary dentistry, Pearline Health's interior is a breath of fresh air thanks to its bright natural light, a soothing splash of blue on the walls, and fun phrases peppered throughout like the company's motto, "We love a smart mouth" and "Smile 'till your cheeks hurt."
The inability to book your appointment online, having to fill out pages of forms upon arrival, and the long in-office wait. These are just a few of the barriers Pearline Health has eliminated, making teeth cleaning bookings as easy as ordering Postmates. It offers 30-minute appointments—that actually start and end on time—with registered dental hygienists.
Cleanings at Pearling Health have a set fee of $99 or are free with insurance. Second cleanings are free. Also $99 is its natural, organic whitening service—an eco-friendly process that uses ingredients free of warnings that are manufactured in the U.S. in a LEED-certified building powered by solar panels.
The whitening system, for which Pearline Health uses BPA-free recyclable trays, is designed to whiten your teeth by two to five shades. The team will even send you home with its complimentary whitening pen to help you maintain your bright smile at home. Limited exams are $35 and fluoride treatments are $35. Typical dentists charge $300+ for the same services.
In addition to easy bookings, you can share and access health histories and past visit summaries, check in, receive post-appointment recommendations, and more through the company's proprietary technology accessible via your phone.
Pearline Health still wants you to see your general dentist for annual comprehensive exams and x-rays but is helping prevent larger problems from developing and improve overall health by encouraging and offering cleanings more frequently. In the next 24 months, it plans to open five more locations all within L.A., so no excuses.
