From how they dress to what they eat, the French have seemingly nailed the secret to living an effortlessly chic lifestyle. In reality, our friends in France have just mastered the art of balance (eat a baguette, then walk everywhere), but they've also got a few other tricks when it comes to maintaining their slim silhouettes—including a massage technique called
A longtime favorite among wellness enthusiasts in Europe, the treatment has officially landed in L.A. by way of Emmanuelle Blanche, a new wellness center founded by Parisian expat Emmanuelle Carter (herself a 15-year devotee to the method) that opened in West Hollywood at the end of January. Here's how it works: In order to reduce that pesky dimpling on the upper thighs, derrière, and legs (among other parts), therapists manually roll the fat cells and connective tissue with their hands so that the fascia can move more freely. (Get a taste of what it's like here.)
In addition to boosting elasticity, the message also helps to relax muscles, promote lymphatic and blood circulation, improve stretching reflexes, and reduce water retention, to name just a few benefits.
The one-hour treatment typically go like this: A 3D scanner captures your body and measurements, allowing you to easily compare your before-and-after stats and results. Next, your therapist will warm the areas of concern, roll your fascia in order to smooth out cellulite, and finish the treatment with a "fanning massage" to flush out toxins.
It's worth noting that cellulite won't get erased in a single treatment. Visible results typically come in four to six sessions, and a regular regimen of one to two treatments per month is recommended to keep the dimples at bay. Devotees also point out that
As far as pricing, single sessions are $160 and monthly memberships are $140 to $260 for one or two massages per month, respectively. Packages of 10 or 15 sessions ($1,500 or $2,100) are also available.
