You can now add non-toxic nail touch-ups to your Nordstrom shopping list. Denver-bred Base Coat Salon has set up shop inside not one, but three of the retailer's SoCal outposts: At The Grove and at its inventory-less Local space on Melrose Place in Los Angeles as well as its Fashion Island store in Newport Beach.
The shop-in-shops offer the plant-based beauty spot's full menu — sans the yucky stuff like camphor, formaldehyde, parabens, petrochemicals, sulfates, skin-aging UV lights, nail-damaging acrylics, and skin-drying polish removers. Beauty buffs can pick from 105 long-wearing (and Leaping Bunny-certified) lacquer colors, while services include on-the-go manicures ($30) and pedicures ($40), signature manis ($40) and pedis ($50), 10-free oxygenating gel manicures ($40 to $50), and its aromatherapy-infused Luxe coats ($50 to $60) that are topped off with a hand or foot massage. Ditto on the add-ons and extras, like nail art, 10-minute aromatherapy massages, and quickie polish changes ($5 to $20 and up).
Base Coat tapped Portland-based design studio Casework to dream up its Nordstrom spaces, which feature the salon's signature '70s-inspired interiors with natural and modern touches. Casework designer Casey Keasler explains that LA-based talents also had a hand in the salons' interiors. She worked with LA artist Attalie Dexter to whip up a one-of-a-kind wall hanging for The Grove location, while Downtown-based Sign Makers LA created a custom neon sign for Base Coat's OC location.
