Silver Lake is already a retail therapy mecca for those who prefer to venture off the most-traveled path, which is why Hazel Brown fits right in with the hip neighborhood. Founded by Canada-bred painter and designer Ali Blankley (who recently relocated back to Los Angeles after living in Buffalo, New York), the raw and refined luxury label has set up shop on a low-key stretch of Fountain Avenue, just a short stroll from Sunset Junction.
Housed in a 1920s-built space that was previously a D.W.P. building, the 900-square-foot light-filled boutique and design studio stocks Hazel Brown's high-end womenswear with a wabi-sabi aesthetic: Think gauzy tunics made of Japanese cotton ($348), ruffled floral blouses with extra long sleeves ($364), breezy double-pleated skirts ($408), ethereal silk criss-cross dresses in dainty red polka dots or crisp white ($528), and crinkled grey plaid jackets ($619), to name just a few — all displayed on custom metal fixtures handmade by Blankley's metalsmith partner.
In addition to exclusive pieces that Blankley designed just for her brick-and-mortar shop, expect to find her luxe organic sleepwear, loungewear, and bedding label, Domi as well as her handmade ceramics and decor.
Hazel Brown was born by chance when Blankley was introduced to the store owner of edgy-luxe boutique Minnie T's, Barbara Phillips, who bought the designer's handmade apparel. "I wish I had an earnest homespun story abut the name Hazel brown, but I do not," Blankley tells us. "Had I ever thought I was actually creating a serious business when I started using that name, I would have over thought it and probably come up with something not quite as good. I like it; it has a sort of neutrality about it that lends itself well to longevity."
