Beachside Brand Saturdays NYC Brings Surf Classics and Japanese Design to Newport Beach Pop-Up

The store marks the East Coast-bred brand's first outpost in California.

Recognized for their classic aesthetics, high-grade materials, trendy retail spaces, and local inclusion, Saturdays NYC has become a must-have beachside brand for apparel and accessories alike. Beginning with their first store on a cobblestone street in New York City's trendy SoHo neighborhood in 2009 and now available internationally, the brand made its California debut with its first West Coast pop-up boutique at Newport Beach's Lido Marina Village.

Mimicking the brand's various stores throughout the world, the new retail space is outfitted with a minimalistic yet natural design, influenced by Japanese architecture. Just past the oversized storefront windows and traditional white façade, the 1,200-square-foot space is outlined by heightened ceilings and a polished concrete floor. Whitewashed walls, intricately positioned lighting, and linear wood decor provide a clean layout while allowing the colorful apparel, products, and art to be the focal point of the store.

Although temporary, the pop-up is stocked with the brand's core mainstays and seasonal offerings like vibrant t-shirts ($40 to $125) and shorts ($95 to $175), plush loungewear ($115 to $225), weather-proof outerwear ($195 to $695), numerous beachside accessories, and of course, a wide selection of stylish swimwear ($95 to $145) that was built for surfing, but fit just as well if simply hanging sea-side.

Alongside the polished apparel, stellar finds such as curated selections of artwork, unique surfboards shaped by local artisans, and wetsuits from Feral surfing meld the store into the beachside lifestyle of Newport Beach.

"To be back here and opening our first store on the West Coast, embracing the local community and having the opportunity to do more in my hometown, is something that I have trouble putting into words," Morgan Collet, co-founder of Saturdays NYC and Newport Beach native, tells UncoverLA.

Alongside his fellow co-founder, Colin Tunstall, the duo pinpointed the luxury-loving seaside town for their Cali retail debut not only because of its geographical location and picturesque beaches, but also for its one-of-a-kind surf culture that is already heavily ingrained within the community.

The clean-lined store's location at Lido Marina Village also harks back to the Newport Beach community's roots. Opened in 1971, the tiered shopping destination has long been known as the go-to venue for bespoke goods from local artists, craftsmen, and tastemakers. This feeling continues today with cultivated brands and diverse eateries such as The Real Real, Le Labo, LoveShackFancy, and Nobu, all lining the waterfront locale.

Over the years, the unisex brand has gained a substantial following from surfers and celebrities alike, with the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Jay-Z, and Chris Pine all having been seen donning Saturdays NYC gear while out and about. Today, Saturdays NYC holds retail spaces all over the world including the United States, Australia, and Japan, continually expanding their presence to create a sense of community that is special but also accessible.
