RYU's First West Coast Store Brings Urban Fitness Essentials to Abbot Kinney

Venice's boardwalk-bound sweat fiends have a new option for sleek workout wear. Last month, we revealed that RYU was opening its first Stateside outpost on Abbot Kinney. The Canada-based brand has officially arrived in Venice last week, bringing its urban athletic gear into a community-minded space.

The brand is known for its seamless workout essentials made from fabrics that offer UFP50+ protection and control odor and moisture from sweat. Their women's and men's apparel and accessories ($43 to $140 and up) were designed with running, boxing, weight lifting, and other training activities and "tailored for any urban setting."

At RYU's Abbot Kinney shop, expect to find the "most recognized, most liked pieces [like] the Trylayr waistband tights, our Vapor line, the Ethos pieces, our iconic backpacks and our Everywear pant and jogger, both for men and women," CEO Marcello Leone and business development director Massimo Bellini Bressi tell us. "With the Ethos line, we are reinventing the sweatshirt and the hoodie and even if the warm weather is a powerful factor, it is a piece [that Angelenos] will be able to wear without any problem, as well as our tights or our Everywear pants."

The shop will also host regular events each week, including fitness classes, nutrition and lifestyle seminars, charitable happenings, and many other community-minded initatives, they say.

The brand — which stands for "respect your universe" — will soon reveal a mural created by a local artist and "that speaks to Venice and to the 'respect' value we stand for [and] we are very excited about it," Leone and Bressi say. As far as why they selected to make their U.S. debut on the coastal block, the brand explains that the goal was to land on the radars of tourists and locals alike.

"The athlete is at the center of our movement, and the community is the sum of all our members: We are looking for locations where the sense of community is very strong and very unique; people living in Venice are very proud of their neighborhood, we respect it and we want to connect with them, one by one, at a personal level," RYU's team explains. Their second SoCal outpost at Newport Beach's Fashion Island (which is slated to open in September) also aims to attract the international visitors that shop at the popular retail therapy destination, "but we would have never picked those locations without the sense of community permeating them," say Leone and Bressi.
