Stone Street Owners

For those of us who like to eat in pajamas, hair up, and airplane mode on, there's GrubHub; for those of us who want dining to be more of an IG-worthy event, there's Stone Street LA. Having officially opened in WeHo's Arts District, the new destination graces Melrose with all-day dining, a cocktail bar, a coffee bar, and an outdoor patio.

The new location is the first on the West Coast and has roots that date back to 2010. The original Stone Street Coffee Company in Brooklyn was a neighborhood staple and at one point a functioning front for the famed Bathtub Gin speakeasy. In L.A., the concept goes far beyond what it was in New York – it's now a hybrid space that offers Angelenos signature artisanal coffee, a comprehensive menu for any time of day, and cocktails that take a "molecular approach to locally inspired ingredients in a near zero-waste environment."

The space was designed to fit in with the neighborhood and cater to the creatives that frequent it. Floor-to-ceiling windows illuminate East Coast elements like unfinished ceilings and a window mural of the Brooklyn Bridge. If pure-outdoor better suits your mood, there's a sprawling 1500-square-foot patio with lounge seating and lush greenery for that perfect Sunday brunch feel.

The overall bicoastal vibe is casual yet versatile and even offers entertainment on certain nights that fill the space with energy. Evening programming includes Prohibition Comedy on Wednesdays, live music on Thursday nights, DJ programming, and a Sunday Disco brunch. And by incorporating a classic coffeehouse stage without barriers between performer and audience, the L.A. location seems to prioritize intimacy and authenticity in that respect.

"We are excited to bring the Stone Street name and brand to Los Angeles and create a neighborhood establishment to help further bring back life to the Melrose area post-pandemic. This is a place . . . where live entertainment is part of the culture, and you can catch the best new talent in town. Where New York attitude meets LA energy, and the best of both worlds unite," said co-owner Dave Oz.

Restauranteur and entrepreneur Dave Oz of Stone Street New York and Bathtub Gin New York teamed up with Joel David Moore and Laura Parkening to bring the venue to Cali. Staying true to the brand's roots while adapting to its new L.A. home, the menu features classic items with fun twists.

Curated by Chef John Sheffy, the menu features American-inspired cuisine with an expansive selection of homemade pastries and New York-esque staple dishes. Classic N.Y.C. items are modernized through a calculated fusion of ingredients while the local community is embraced through dishes like the Challah French Toast and Roasted Mary's Chicken. This is a menu where New York heritage and American and global inspiration combine for a particularly familiar yet interesting dining experience.

We'd have to recommend the vegan stuffed potatoes with garlic streusel and mushroom ragu and then a side of braised swiss chard. Non-vegans have a vast array of options from comforting chicken tenders to decadent trout almandine. The day menu ranges from $8 to $16, small plates from $7 to $16, mains from $15 to $24, and desserts are $9.

Depending on whether you cap your meals with java or a drink, the options are endless. And because coffee is part of the venue's identity, Stone Street goes all-out. Their Brooklyn location roasts small batches of ethically sourced beans that are then shipped to L.A. and mixed here.

If a cocktail is more your thing post-meal, there are 12 on the menu to choose from. Award-winning Beverage Consultant Brendan Bartley created craft cocktails with classic recipes that infuse new and unique flavors. Our go-to would have to be the Walking in L.A. ($13) which mixes gin with lemon, lime, orange flower water, oat milk, and aquafaba, which is just so L.A. (said in Cher's accent from Clueless); or the Welcome to Hollywood ($12) with vodka, strawberry, and lemon. Cocktails range from $12 to $15 and wine and beer from $8 to $12.

"Stone Street LA is committed to providing warm, genuine, and unpretentious hospitality as we serve unique menu offerings for all things coffee, cocktails, and culinary. Our skilled baristas honor both classic espresso beverages like cafe lattes and flat whites, as well as new coffee trends like matcha lattes and espresso tonics. Our food menu provides a little something for everyone. With a nod to N.Y. classics like the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a Roll, to L.A. favorites like Avocado Toast and popular brunch offerings,…we aim to surprise and delight," said co-owner Laura Parkening.
